Why We Care

The Placida Rd. corridor and the Cape Haze peninsula is a unique area. During the early part of this century Cape Haze was “discovered” and developers saw opportunities to dramatically change the landscape. Many saw this area as a place to replicate Miami Beach or Fort Myers Beach. Those of us who call this home live here, in large measure, because we did not want to live in an over developed area and we wanted to assure the environment and ecology was protected. We realized that unless we communicated, educated and advocated that this little part of paradise we call home could look just like other overdeveloped areas we see in parts of the state.

We were referred to by some who would overbuild here as “Nimby’s”, (Not in my backyard). While this was intended as a slur. We realize if we, the citizens who live here, don’t speak out against that which will destroy the quality of life, who will?

We will continue to work with our community partners and be vigilant with respect to proposed developments and proposed changes to land use regulations that could adversely affect the quality of life here. But, at the same time, we will not oppose a landowner doing that which is consistent with current zoning and land use regulations.

Another aspect of our mission is to call for adequate infrastructure to accompany development as it occurs. What was adequate in a county with 90,000 residents may not be adequate today.

We will bring together concerned citizens and homeowners associations to communicate, educate and advocate for those actions that will maintain the overall quality of life on the Cape Haze peninsula.
